The basis of the curriculum is formulated by the National Board of Education. It’s a national norm which demands that every organizer of education has to have their own curriculum.
The basis of the curriculum is based on the basic education law and other legislation. Education organizers have to follow the basis of the curriculum. The basis defines the contents of the curriculum, the goals and contents for each subject, how to support studying, how to teach pupils with an immigrant background and how to evaluate students .For evaluation there are descriptions of good skills and a criteria for the evaluation of the school leaving certificate.
In the beginning of the basic education there was no basis of curriculum. Instead there was a national curriculum that was used all over Finland. The first basis of education was formulated in 1985. Since then the basis of curriculum has been updated in every ten years (in 1994, in 2004 and in 2014).
